What pressure system does the coriolis effect make winds move?
From higher pressure to lower pressure and are deflected to the right or left by earth's rotation
in the norhtern hemisphere which direction do winds blow around a low pressure?
inward and clockwise
In the N. hemisphere which direction do winds blow around a high pressure system?
they blow outward and clockwise
What do winds do in the S. Hemisphere?
Winds are deflected to the left so around a low pressure: blow clockwise
high pressure: move counterclockwise
What do monsoon refer to?
a wind system that exhibits a pronounced season reversal in direction
Where are the westerlies?
Circulation in the midlatitudes move from west to east around the globe
What is the temperature like around the equator?
Receives maximum solar heating so the temperature will be warm and the air is moist and rising
What are the winds like around the equator?
are light because it is a low pressure system
What kidn of zone is around the equator?
Convergent zone becase the air north and south moves towards it
How are the poles different from the characteristics of the weather around the equator?
They get minimum solar heating, the air here will be cold and dry because it is always a high pressure area and surface winds diverge from the poles
What is the coriolis effect?
the deflective force of Earth's rotation on all free moving objects, including atmosphere and oceans
Which direction does the deflection occur in the N and S Hemisphere?
N Hemisphere= the right
S hemisphere= left
How does the coriolis effect take place?
as the speed of earth rotation varies with latitude, the air going north would be fast, easterly and air moving south would be slower, westerly
ARe winds in the N Hemisphere around a low pressure convergent or divergent?
Convergent and go counterclockwise
What is the adiabatic rate?
the rate at which air rises and cools and then as it cools it expands
how is the adiabatic rate measure?
every 10 degrees celsius per 1000 m
What is the wet adiabatic rate?
To view how air sinks/condenses and is measured every 4 to 8 degrees celsius per 1000m.
What are the characteristics for cold air?
Is dry, sinking, and clear skies around a high pressure system
What is warm air like?
moist, rising, and found around a low pressure system (cloudy skies, rainy)
What is the name of the latitude between -10to+10 degrees?
equatorial low, has lots of rainforests (doldrums)
What latitude is between 10 to 25?
tropics region, where the weather is wet and dry tropical, trade winds come from the east
Where is the subtropical high region located?
25 to 35 degrees, mroe desert, known as the horse latitudes, characterized by very humid, warm, dry seasons
Where do we live?
The Temperate zone, 35-50 winds are westerly, the weather comes from the west. 9differnet than the windbelt in the tropics)
What latitude is at 50-60?
the subpolar low, cloudy, damp, characterized by alot of polar front systems.
What is a polar front?
Separate polar and tropical air masses and it circulates the globe
Which latitude is found between 60 and 90?
polar high and here the winds reverse again due to coriolis effect and are east winds. the air is cold but dry
Why do belts shift in season?
because of the earth's rotation
Why does Kentucky have so many droughts in July?
Because it is close to the subtropical high latitude.
What is different about the weather in Kentucky in Januray?
It is colder because its closer to the polar front because marine air moving over lands cools and produces more clouds
What are the 3 wind belts?
Subpolar low, subtropical high, and equatorial low
Which direction does the wind blow in the subpolar low and equatorial low?
They move in the same direction from the east to the west
Which direction do the winds blow in the subtropical high?
In reverse direction from west to east
Why are the winds different in subtropical high?
The areas of constant high/low pressure alternate with constant wind belts
Why do monsoons occur?
Season wind patterns which occur because of seasonal changes in wind direction
What are the two monsoon seasons?
Wet and Dry
What is the monsoon weather like in July-September in Asia?
Asia' interior is not around a low pressure area so they get wet monsoons off the Indian Ocean, air flows onto the land
What is the monsoon weather like in November-April in Asia?
Asia's interior is cold around a high pressure system so they get dry monsoon from the North. The surface flow is directed off the land.
how is general circulation produced? (why does it happen)
Produced by cells of high and low pressure over the oceans is complicated by seasonal pressure changes over land
What are local winds?
affected by local pressure gradients, and are caused by topographic effects or variations in surface composite
What are two types of breezes?
Shore breezes and valley breezes
