Apartheid

In 1948, white South Africans began a policy of Aparthied (seperating racial groups).

Appeasement

British prime minister Neville Chamberlain met with Hitler in Munich and tried appeasement (granting concessions to avoid war). Chamberlain agreed to Hitler's demand for the Sudetenland in western Czechoslovakia.


Aztecs

The Aztecs settled in central mexico around 1300. They learned to grow corn and aqquired other skills from their neighbors. Over thee next two centries, they often went to war and conquered neighboring peoples. Captured warriors were sacrificed to Aztec sun god. Black Death

In the late 1300s, rats with fleas carrying the bubonic plague (known as the black death) entered Europe from asia on trading ships. Between 1347 and 1351, one third of europe's population died in the epidemic.

Bolsheviks

Communist revolutionaries known as bolsheviks, led by vladimir Lenin, called for the overthrow of the new government and withdrawl from the war. The bolsheviks promised the russian people "peace, bread, and land".

Boxer Rebellion

Many Chinese resented the growing foreign influence in their homeland. That same year, a chinese group known as the "boxers" arose in rebellion and attacked foreign residents in china. The boxers were secretly supported by the imperial government, but an international expeditionary force intervened and crushed the boxer rebellion.

Buddhism

Indian prince Siddhartha Gautama, was the founder of Buddhism. He believed human desire caused human suffering, and that to find inner peace one must renounce all desires. Gautama became known as Buddha, meaning "enlightened one". Buddhists followed the eightfold path, in wich they gave up wealth, meditate, and respect all other living things. Following the path allows people to escape the cycle of reincarnation, to achieve a state of peace and happiness (nirvana). It spread from india to china, japan, and southeast asia.

Bushido

Samurai warriors followed a strict code of honor known as bushido, which emphasized loyalty to nobles known as the daimyo.

Byzantine Empire

The western half of the roman empire collapsed in the 5th century, the eastern half, known as the byzantine empire lasted for another thousand years. The emperors ruled from the capital of constantinople with the help of a powerful army. Emperor justinian made the code of justinian and built a magnificent church calledthe Hagia Sophia. Byzantines were greatly influenced by greek and roman culture. Byzantines developed their own form of christianity, known as the eatern orthdox christianity.

Hitler agreed to leave the ussr out of war, but then he invaded poland starting the war. Japan attacked U.S when they threatened a naval blockade. Japan attacked pearl harbor on december, 1941.

The sultan was overthrown in 1908 by a group know as the young turks. They encouraged industrialization, public education, and better treatment of women.

Capitalism
