"with a ragged diamond/of shattered plate-glass"
in this metaphor the word "diamond" the word "diamond" makes us think of something precious and speacial. however, in the poem it is described as "ragged which helps us to imagine the dangerous and sharp shape o the glass as it is smashed. "shattered" as an onomatopoeia which further helps us to imagine the noise of the glass as it is broken. furthermore we are made to think the young couple are at the jewellers buying a ring because of the word "diamond".
"The young man's face/is bristling with fragments of glass"
Another metaphor is used to compare the glass and the man's face to a beard. This helps the reader to imagine the man's face being covered in millions of pieces of glass. The reader therefore felt increadibly sorry for the man as his face is likely to be permanetly scarred.
"spurts arterial blood/over her wet-look white coat"
the word " spurts" is an onomatopoeia which helps us to imagine the horrific noice of the blood as it leaves the girls body. this helps the reader to feel as ifthey are there and the word "arterial" is a medical language this allows the reader to think how black the blood is. when it describes it hitting her "wet look coat".
"their faces show surprise, shock/and the beginning of pain"
alliteration is used to draw attention to this line. there we see the emotions of the young couple changing as they fell into the window almost as if someone is catching every scene with a camera. this again helps us to feel as if we are there.
"there faces show no expression"
the faces of the youths compare with those of the young couple. unlike the young couple, they appear to feel nothing after completing the "operation", this tells us that they simply had a job to do and did not care who they hurt in the process
"in the background two drivers/keep eyes on the road"
while all this is happening two drivers are completely ignoring what is going on the word "keep" suggests that they have chosen to focus straight ahead and do not intend to stop doing this, perhaps they have chosen to do this because they do not want to get involved.
