Define Resolution

The ability of remote sensing system to record & display fine spatial, spectral, temporal, and radiometric detail.

Name the 4 resolution types

*Spatial resolution

*Spectral resolution

*Radiometric resolution

*Temporal resolution

What influences what you're observing?

*Contrast

*Shape

*Ratio

*Regularity of shape

*Number of objects

*Extent & uniformity of background

Define SPATIAL RESOLUTION

Refers to the size of the smallest possible feature that can be detected

Ways of measuring spatial resolution?

*GRD (Ground resolved distance)

*Line Pairs per Millimeter (lp/mm)

*MTF (“Modulation transfer Functions”)

Define SPECTRAL RESOLUTION

Width of spectral bands. Finer the spectral resolution, narrower the wavelength range for a particular channel or band.

Define RADIOMETRIC RESOLUTION

Describes the actual information content of an image. Finer the radiometric resolution of a sensor, more sensitive it is to detecting small differences in reflected or emitted energy.

Define TEMPORAL RESOLUTION

Revisit time: How long before sensor visits (can image) the same location

Temporal resolution is important for?

-Vegetation/crop monitoring

-Monitor flooding

-Urban development

-Deforestation monitoring
