H2 receptor antagonists

Rantidine 150mg twice a day - help reduce acid by blocking acid production.

Proton pump inhibitors

All the 'prozoles' - 1 tablet every day for no more than a week. Completely stops acid production.

MgOh, AlOh, simethicone


2-4 tablets 3-4 times a day

Gaviscon

Sodium alginate - >12 yrs 10-20mL 4x a day

Bulk forming laxatives

e.g metamucil - 48-72hrs to work Husk, psyllium, sterculia.

Docusate 50-150mg od or bd

Osmotic laxatives

Retain fluid in bowel


Lactulose, sorbitol (24-72hrs),


glycerol suppository, PEG, saline laxatives (5,30mins)

Stimulant laxatives

Bisacodyl, Senna


Oral - 6-12hrs, Rectal - 5-60mins.

Mild vs. moderate vs. severe dehyration

<5% - thirsty, sunken eyes, dry mucous membranes, dark yellow urine




5-10% - Drinks eagerly, decreased urination which is dark amber or brown, sunken fontanelle.




>10% body weight - confusion, too lethargic to say they're thirsty, collapse, rapid breathing, no urination.

Opioids anti-diarrhoeals

Loperamide (2mg)- 2 straight away, then one after every bowel movement




Diphenoxylate - 2 tabs tds-qid

Anal fissures

Glycerol trinatrate - relaxes anal sphincter, reducing pressure.
