What is an Einzellagen?

A single-vineyard wine area; the smallest georaphical unit allowed under German wine law

|
A collective site covering large vineyard areas & encompassing several Einzellagen (single sites) & many villages, each of which comprise large numbers of Einzellagen

Why is the Grosslage classification problematic?

By law, the term is not required to appear on German wine labels & when listed, the name of the Grosslage follows the village name, leading consumers to believe that a Grosslage wine is from a single Einzellage.
