The stab in the back myth

The stability in the back myth was a rumour spread by General army leaders like Ludendorff that said that Germany had been betrayed by the new democratic government when they signed the treaty.

The Germans found this treaty hard to accept as they didn't think it was their fault and thought it wasn't fair. They were also weakened by the treaty as they had to give money.

Article 48

Said that in an emergency the President could make laws without first going to the Reichstag.

Strengths of the Weimar constitution

-All Germans had equal rights, including the right to vote

-proportional representation made sure that political parties were allocated seats in parliament in proportion to the number of votes they got. This was fair.

-a strong president was necessary to keep control over the government and to protect the country in a crisis

-each state had its own traditions. It was right they should keep some control over their own affairs

Weaknesses of the Weimar constitution

-In 1919 the republic had too many enemies. It wasn't sensible to give equal rights to those who wished to destroy it

-proportional representation encouraged lots of small parties which each got a small number of MP's . No one party could get a majority, so governments had to be coalitions. There could never be a strong government.

-The president had too much power. It was possible he could become a dictator

-The states could be hostile to the national government, and even try to overthrow it.

How did the depression help Hitler

After the wall street crash loans were recalled, this hit Germany badly. Hitler offered stability and solution when the Weimar government had none. Poverty caused by unemployment was almost 6 million by 1932.
