James Oglethorpe
Interested in prison conditions in England. Chairmen of parliamentary committee to investigate. Along with Viscount Percival (Earl of Egmont) petitioned the king for land on the south west of Carolina for settling poor persons in London. 21 trustees for establishing the colony of Georgia. Georgia was granted the lands between savanna and Altamaha rivers. Oglethorpe accompanied the colonists
Ellis Arnall
ran against Talmadge for governor who vowed to remove the University system from politics. After being elected, he removed the governor from the board of regents and enlarged the board. After this the university was again included into the accredited list. He granted the vote to 18 year olds. He repealed the poll tax. He established the Reid penitentiary. Put together a board to rewrite the constitution in 1945 that was approved by the voters.
Trustees
set up colony of Georgia, limited powers; could not be compensated; money to settle Georgia came from trustees. England had control of trade, but effort was from the trustees. Trustees garden was set up in Savanna to hold the plants Georgia was hoped to produce. Emphasis was put on silk and wine. Most crops died. Settlers were told by the trustees to plant mulberry trees for silk worm food.
Salzburgers
Expelled from their home in the archbishopic of Salzberg in germany, the Salzbergs landed in Savanna and then moved to Ebeneezer Ga. Strong Christians in the North Georgia Wilderness. Salzbergers produced the most silk until England reduced the $ for silk. 1768.
Battle of Bloody Marsh
Spanish seized St. Augustine, Oglethorpe retreated to St. Simons. Spanish battle at st simons and are defeated in the battle of bloody marsh. Spanish retreat and abandon any plans of taking over Georgia.
Lyman Hall
Dr Lyman Hall of St John’s parish was elected to be a delegate to the first continental congress – but he refused. Later St. John’s parish elected him to represent their parish at the 2nd continental congress. He also collected rice and cash to help the Bostonians who had their port closed by Britain. Later Georgia became more and more opposed to the king and he served as a representative to Georgia.
St. John’s Parish
unable to influence the other parishes to oppose Brittan, St. Johns parish tried to succeed to S. Carolina. S Carolina refused because it would be a detached parish. Lyman Hall elected to represent them in the second continental congress.
Tondee Tavern meeting
2nd meeting in Savanna condemned the actions of the British government and selected delegates to the first continental congress.
Lester Maddox
A 1966 segregationist who was elected governor. Actually, he was selected to be by the Democratic Ga. Government because no party received a majority of the votes. Had no real organization or power which allowed for more power in the legislature. 1970 was lieutenant Governor under Jimmy Carter.
Count d'Estaing
in the revolution. Eagerly anticipated he brought 4000 French troops to battle for Savanna from Britain. He and Lincoln were at war with Britain, but d’Estaing found the siege too slow and acted alone which lost many French and American lives. The problem was a lack of coordination between operations.

Treaty of New York
(1790) after the brittish left Ga. Relations became tense between the Indians and Georgians where settlers were taking more and more of Indian rich Piedmont area lands. The creeks gave up lands between the Ogeechee and Oconee rivers in the treaty of New York .
