Altitude of a quadrilateral.

The altitude of a quadrilateral with parallel sides is the distance between those sides. (It is measured with a perpendicular line segment between them.)

Altitude of a triangle.

The altitude of a triangle is the distance from any vertex to the line of the opposite side. (It is measured with a perpendicular line segment between them.)

area

The area of a polygon is the number that is the measure of the region bounded by the polygon.

polygonal region

The union of a polygon with its interior.

The Area Postulate

Every polygonal region has a positive number called its area such that
(1) congruent triangles have equal areas and
(2) the area of a polygonal region is equal to the sum of the areas of its nonoverlapping parts.

Postulate 9
The Area of a Rectangle

The area of a rectangle is the product of the lengths of its base and altitude.

A (rectangle) = bh

Corollary to Postulate 9
The Area of a Square

The area of a square is the square of the length of a side.

A (square) = s^2

Theorem 38
The area of a right triangle is...

half the product of its legs.

A (triangle) = (bh)/2

Theorem 39
The area of a triangle is...

half the product of any base and a corresponding altitude.

A (triangle) = (bh)/2

Corollary to Theorem 39
Triangles with equal bases and equal altitudes
have equal areas.
Theorem 40
The area of a parallelogram...

is the product of any base and corresponding altitude.

A (parallelogram) = bh

Theorem 41
The area of a trapezoid is...

half the product of its altitude and the sum of its bases. (You may also think of the area as the product of the average of the bases and the altitude.)

A (trapezoid) = (b1 + b2)/2 * h

Theorem 42
The Pythagorean Theorem
The square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of its legs.
Theorem 43
Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem
If the square of one side of a triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides, the triangle is a right triangle.
If the square of one side of a triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides, then...
the triangle is a right triangle.

In a trapezoid, the product of the average of the bases and the altitude is...

the area of the trapezoid.

In a parallelogram, the product of any base and corresponding altitude is...

the area of the parallelogram.
The union of a polygon with its interior is called...
a polygonal region.
The number that is the measure of the region bounded by the polygon is...
its area.
The altitude of a triangle is measured using...
the length of a line perpendicular to the line of the base to the opposite vertex.
The line that connects a vertex of a triangle perpendicularly to the line of the opposite side is called...

an altitude of the triangle.

The base of a triangle is...
the length of any side.
