arc
a continuous part of a circle. the measure of an arc is the measure of the angle formed by two radii with endpoints of the arc
central angle
angle whose vertex is the center of the circle and whose sides are radii of the circle
chord
a segment whose endpoints are both on the circle
circle
all points in a plane equidistant from a given point (center)
circumference
the distance around a circle
circumscribed polygon
a polygon containing a circle which touches each side of the polygon in exactly one point.
concentric
two or more coplanar circles sharing a center point
diameter
a chord that contains the center of a circle
exterior angle
an angle whose vertex is outside the cirlce, and whose sides are secants and/or tangents
inscribed angle
an angles whose vertex is on the circle and whose sides are secants and/or tangents
inscribed polygon
a circle containing a polygon whose vertices are on the edge of the circle
intercepted arc
an arc cut off by an angle of the circle, trapped between the sides of the angle
interior angle
an angle with its vertex inside a circle, a central angle is also an interior angle
major arc
the largest distance between two endpoints of an arc. named by the endpoints of the arc plus a third point.
minor arc
the shortest distance between two endpoints of an arc. named by the endpoints.
point of tangency
the point at which a tangent intersects a circle of the intersection of two circles. a radius to this point is perpendicular to the tangent.
radius
a segment or distance from the center of a circle to a point on the circle
secant
a line that intersects a circle at two points, and contains a chord
semicircle
an arc whose endpoints are the endpoints of the diameter of the circle
tangent
a line in the plane of a circle that intersects the circle in exactly one point
tangent segment
segment of the tangent that has the point of tangency as one of its endpoints
secant segment
segment of the secant that starts outside the circle and ends on the circle, containing both intersection points
exterior secant segment
part of the secant segment that is outside the circle
