Aquifer

Underground layer of rock that contain bearing water.

River

Basin

Depression or dip in the Earth's surface. Shaped like bowls with sides higher than the bottom

Bay

Body of water partially surrounded by land. Smaller and less enclosed than a gulf with a wider mouth.

Cape

A high point of land that extends into a body of water. Narrow features that jut out into a body of water.

Cataract

A large or high waterfall

Channel

A wide waterway between two landmasses that lie close to each other. Can be the deepest part of a waterway.

Coastal plains

Flat low-lying land next to the ocean. Separated from other nearby interior landforms.

Delta

Triangle shaped wetlands that form as rivers empty their water and sediment into another body of water.



A river moves more slowly as it nears its mouth/ end. This causes sediment, solid material carried down stream by currents, to fall to the bottom of the river. Flow and slowed velocity of the river and build up of sediment allowed the river to break into a single channel near the mouth under the right conditions

These areas are ideal for urban centers the nutrient rich soil in the plain are ideal centers for agriculture

Area of water from a larger body of water that extends into land.



Refers to the actual connection between a bay and the ocean and is often called an entrance

Island

Land surrounded with water on all sides

Isthmus

A narrow strip of land that connects two larger land masses and separates two bodies of water.

Mesa

Steep flat topped mountain. Flat elevated land form with steep sides

Peninsula

Land that is almost completely surrounded by water but is connected to the mainland on one side.

Plain

Broad flat land.
