What is a Seismograph?
Device used to record earthquakes. Readings are used to estimate magnitude or size of the earthquake.
What controls magnitude of an earthquake? ( Area of fault broken)
1. Geometry of the fault
2. What happens in the rocks seconds after it begins (How strong are the rocks) |
What is the common scale used?
Richter Scale
Are all scales logarithmic? If so, does the energy released increase or decrease and how fast?
Yes, and energy released increases rapidly
What is an After Shock?
aftershock- smaller magnitude earthquakes that persists for days or weeks following the main shock
What is Liquefaction?
Conversion of wet sediment to flowing sediment and water. Structures are built on weak sediments like sand boil
What is Tsunami
Large, fast moving sea wave usually created by an earthquake whose epicenter is in the ocean
Where do earthquakes occur?
Plate Boundaries
What is a rift zone?
Large valley bounded by large normal faults
What are P & S waves?
body waves that travel through the earth
What do seismic waves velocity depend on?
Rock composition, temperature, and density of rock
* Seismic waves speed up with depth in earth |
