levee
An artificial embankment of loose material placed at the edge of a channel to prevent floodwater from spreading over a floodplain.
breaching
Failure of part of river's levee, leading to some flow outside the main channel.
piping
Water seeping through a dam or levee can begin to carry sand and cause erosion.
avulsion
The permanent change in a stream channel, generally during a flood when a stream breaches its levee to send most of its flow outside of its channel.
sand boil
