What is the process of scientific method?
1. Observation
2. Hypothesis
3. Experiment
4. Theory
5. Build Models
Explain the scientific method.
A procedure for discovering how the universe works through systematic observations and experiments.
Explain the term hypothesis.
A tentative explanation based on observational data and experiments
What happens when a hypothesis is confirmed?
After being presented to scientists to be criticized and repeatedly tested, it gains credibility especially if it explains new data or predicts outcomes to new experiments.
What is a theory?
A coherent set of hypotheses that explain some set of nature. Good theories are supported by substantial sets of data that have survived repeated challenges.
Explain topography.
The general configuration of varying heights that gives shape to Earth's surface, which is measured with respect to sea level
What is the principle of Uniformatarianism?
The processes we see now are the same as the were and will always be the same:
"geologic processes we see in action on Earth today have worked in much the same way throughout the geologic past".
What is geology?
Discovering the layered earth
"Like an onion"
What is a geologic record?
The information preserved in rocks; the information can be preserved to understand the Earth's history
What are the different measurements of the Earth's layers?
Crust: 40 km thick
Mantle: 40- 2890 km
Liquid iron core: 2890- 5150 km
Solid iron core
Who was the first to accurately calculate the circumference of the Earth?
Eratosthenes, a Greek Librarian after a traveler had observed the shadows cast by the sun at different locations at noon.
Explain the shape of the earth at its poles and at the equator.
Earth is almost spherical, but bulges at the equator and is slightly squashed at the poles because of its rotation.
What are the two types of meteoroids?
- stony: similar composition to Earth's silicate mantle
- iron/nickle: similar composition to Earth's core
How did scientists conclude that earth is constructed of a mix of materials?
Because when meteoroids hit Earth, they realized that they consisted of both heavier and lighter material, which explained why earth was so heavy with such light materials in the crust.
What is the Nebular Hypothesis?
Regards the formation of the Solar System
