The study of the surface of the Earth, to include the atmospheric sciences, hydrology, physical oceanography, geology, geomorphology, soil science and plant ecology and the processes that act on it.
Physical Geography
The aggregate of social, physical, and cultural conditions that influence the life of an individual or a community, i.e., the surroundings.
Environment
Consists of the entire "solid" portion of the Earth. It includes the Crust and the upper portion of the Mantle.
Lithosphere
A thin gaseous envelope that surrounds the Earth.
Atmosphere
Zone of the Earth which contains the free water in either the soid, liquid, or gaseous state.
Hydrosphere
The entire realm where life (plant and anima) is found on Earth.
Biosphere
A cloud of interstellar gas and dust about 1.0 light years wide.
Nebula
Any plane that is passed through the center of a sphere bisects the sphere and creates a great circle where it intersects the surface of the sphere.
Great Circle
The edge of the sunlight hemisphere that is a great circle separating the Earth into a light and dark half.
Circle of Illumination
Imaginary plane that passes through the Earth halfway between the poles and perpendicular to the axis of rotation.
Equator
Plane passing through a sphere that does not pass through its center.
Small Circle
A line connecting all points of the same latitude.
Parallel
An imaginary line of longitude extending from pole, crossing all parallels at right angles, and being aligned in true north-south directions.
Meridian
The angle at which the sun's rays strike the Earth's surface.
Angle of Incidence
The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1.0 gram of a substance by 1 degree C
Specific Heat
"Work" or the capacity to do useful work.
Energy
A form of energy associated with the random motion of molecules.
Heat
A measure of the degrees of "hotness" and "coldness" of a substance
Temperature
Concept of the relative temperature that is sensed by a person's body.
Sensible Temperature
The rate of temperature decrease with height in the troposphere.
Lapse Rate
A situation in which temperature increases upward, and the normal condition is inverted.
Temperature inverision
