properties of hard rock coats? |
cliffs are high beaches are made of boulders and pebbles wave cut platforms are exposed as cliff retreat
soft rock coasts properties? |
clifss are slooping, low beaches are made of mud and sand no stacks or stump
concordant coasts? |
same type of rock along its length few bays and headlands |
discordant coasts? |
geology running parrel to coastline |
explain how cliff erosion happens |
1) weather weakens top of cliff 2) sea attacks base of cliff forming wave cut notch increase in size causing cliff to collapse 3) backwash carries the rubble towards the sea forming wave cut platform |
how is a stump formed? |
1) caves happen when waves force their way into cracks 2) water contains sand which grind away at rock, until cracks --> cave ( this is hydraulic action) 3) if cave is formed in headland, may break to other side forming arch 4) arch becomes bigger, until can no linger hold top of the arch 5) arch collaposes, leaves headland one side and stack on other 6) stack will be attacked weakens structure forms stump |
what is hydraulic action? |
force of water striking cliffs and forcing over into joints - this fractures rock |
what is abrasion? |
rock and sand in waves grind down surface of cliff like sandpaper |
what is attrition? |
rocks rub againest each other on shore , break bbecome smoother |
