Explain how birth rate, death rate, natural increase and how the population pyramid of stages 1 - stage 5 look.

Stage 1: Very high birth rate and very high death rate - low natural increase and very short but wide bottomed pyramid.

Stage 2: V. high birth rate and high death rate - very high natural increase and more equilateral triangle (still short) shape.

Stage 3: Falling birth rate and death rate, rising natural increase and curvy triangle.

Stage 4: Low birth rate and low death rate, stable/low natural increase and long thin shape.

Stage 5: v low birth rate, higher than b.r death rate and negative increase - upside down conical flask.

As countries get more developed they have more access to contraception, medicine and safety advice.

How do you calculate natural increase?

BIRTH RATE - DEATH RATE

find the difference...

On a population pyramid:

- What is the width of the base?

- What is the height of the pyramid?

- What is the angle of the slope?

- Birth rate

- Life expectancy

- Death rate

Why does population begin to rise fast in stage 2?

Improvements in medicine and housing mean that the death rate begins to fall.

Give a named country example for each 5 stages

1 = Amazonian tribe

2 = Mali

3 = Morocco

4 = UK

5 = Germany
