State
|
An independent political unit that permanently populates a territory. They are self governing in both internal and external affairs. An example is the USA. The "United States of America" is a geographical state. |

Pull Factors
|
A place or region that acts as a magnet, attracting people from all over the world. These locations can be like the many religious sites where people make pilgrimages. Another could be a location like the United States of America where we offer freedom. People come to America for freedom and independence.

Centripetal Forces (Geography)
|
A centripetal force is a force that brings people together in a particular place. These can be forces like new high paying jos in a city. THis would attract people from the country to come to the city. Religion is also an example. |

Nation
|
A group with the same or at least similar cultures. Usually a nation is bound together by similar beliefs, customs, and ethnicity. Native tribes around the globe are a good example. Natives are of a single culture, and have the same beliefs about things like gods. That is why the Cherokee are called the Cherokee Nation. |

Distance Decay
|
This is the process of decay that increases the farther out of our comfort zone we are. In reference to the chart, the triangular part shows that the farther away from our comfort zone, the less likely we are to do something. This can be caused by distance, different opinion, or different culture. It all depends on the item.

Pidgin
|
This is the result in which people that speak two different languages are forced to communicate with eachother with very few common words. Usually this is a very primitive language where anything goes so long as the two can communicate. There are no rules, and these languages were seen during times like the slave periods. When african slaves have to communicate with an american master, the two have to develop a language quick so the jobs can get done. |

Gerrymandering
|
This is the process of drawing political boundaries so that you have the upper hand. For example, when a state with both democrats and republicans have to select a representative. If you draw your political lines so that the majority of the areas have a lot of democrats, then democrats get alot of reps. This weakens the power of the republicans. |

EEZ
|
An EEZ, or "Exclusive Economic Zone" is a zone in the sea that a particular state has the rights for. EEZ's were established by the U.N. Convention. When a state has control over an EEZ, it alone has all the rights, incuding the exploration and excavation of marine resourves. It also gives the right to any form of energy harnessed in that area. Ex. Wind turbines, Oil Rigs

Push Factor

In geography, this is a factor that drives people away from a plave or region. Example, an area that has been reduced to a desert would push people away due to lack of resources. Another example is war. Like during the time of Hitler, The Nazi campain pushed many people out of their homeland.

Toponymy
|
Toponymy is the study of toponyms, or location names. Toponymy is studies because scholars believe that toponyms give us insight about the historical geography in a region. Some names may be based on ethnic origins, while sometimes the names themselves can describe the type of landscape.
