Plate Tectonics
Geophysical theory that postulates that Earth is made up of a large # of geological plates that move slowly across its surface.
Converging
2 plates are being forces 2gether by convection cells deep within the Earth.

ex. vocanic Cascade Range, Sierra Nevada,
Andes Mts.
Diverging
Tectonic plates moving away from each other. While diverging magma often flows from the earth's interior, creating mtn. ranges with active volcanoes.

ex. Iceland, Olduvai Gorge (African Rift)
Transform Boundaries
Locations where 2 plates slide past one another.
Latitude
Highest amount of insolation (Solar Energy) is received in the eauatorial region, which is the area between the equator and 23.5 degrees nor and south latitude.
Land
Heat and cool faster than bodies of water. Hot summers and cold winters are always found away from the coast. Continentality
Water
Retain solar heat longer than land areas, oceanic or maritime climates usually have moderate temperatures without the seasonal extremes found inland. Maritime climates.
Atmospheric Pressure
Driving the worlds wind and storm systems is t he uneven heating of Earth due to latitudinal differences and the arrangement of oceans and continents produces a regular pattern of high- and low-pressure systems in the North Pacific.
Winds
Air flows from high pressure to low. (Pressure System produces this) Thus, Winds flow away from high-pressure and into low-pressure cells.

Global Warming Major Gasses
1. Co2 - more than 1/2 of human-generated greenhouse gases. ( Burning fossil fuels like coal and petroleum).

2. CFCs - Chlorofluorocarbons - 25 % of the human-generated greenhouse gases (aerosol sprays and refrigeration, including A/C)

3. CH4-Methane- 15% of anthropogenic greenhouse gases.

4. N2O - 5% of human-caused greenhouse gases from chemical fertilizers.
Earth Summits ( 1992,1997)
1992 - 1st international agreement on global warming at Rio de Janiero Earth summit.

Signatories were bound by international law to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by agreed-upon target dates.

1997 - Another attempt to develop an international treaty in Kyoto, Japanr-current vehicle for international action on climate change - The Kyoto Protocol. This actually increased global warming. Emitted 55% of the world's greenhouse gases.
