Mass wasting

the general process of earth materials moving downslope due to gravity, the terms landslides and avalanches are often used synonymously, but technically refer to specific types of movement.

Triggered mechanism

process or events that lead to a mass wasting event by reducing the frictional forces on a slope and/or increasing the effect of gravity.

Talus pile

A cone-shaped deposit of rocks that accumulates at the base of an exposed rock body due to mass wasting processes.

Land subsidence

the lowering of the land surface due to the closing of void spaces within subsurface materials. Commonly triggered by the withdrawal of subsurface fluid or by the collapse of natural cavities or mining voids.
