Tributary
a stream that flows into a larger stream or other body of water.
River
a stream of water.
Catchment
an area where water is collected by the natural landscape.
Channel
a body of water that flows deeper in the centre and is physically confined by the river bed or banks.
Delta
a landform formed at the mouth of a river where it flows into another body of water.
Estuary
the part of the mouth of the river where its current meets the sea's current.
River basins
The land area drained by a river and its tributaries.
Water shed
the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place.
Meander
a bend in a river.
Oxbow Lake
a U-shaped body of water formed when a wide meander from the main stem of a river is cut off to create a lake.
Levee
an embankment designed to stop a river from flooding.
Riparian Fringe
the area directly along the edge of a river or stream
Sediment
mineral or organic matter deposited by water, air, or ice.
Alluvial Plains/Soils
a fine-grained fertile soil deposited by water flowing over flood plains or in river beds
Bed Load
particles in a flowing fluid (usually water) that are transported along the bed
Erosion
the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves, etc.
Distributaries
A branch of a river that does not return to the main stream after leaving it (as in a delta).
Silt
A long, straight, narrow cut or opening.
pH
a measure of the acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution.
Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
a relative measure of the amount of oxygen that is dissolved or carried in a given medium.
Turbidity
muddiness created by stirring up sediment or having foreign particles suspended
Water Temperature
the temperature of water or other medium.
Displacement
The moving of something from its place or position.
