distant tsunami
A series of gravity waves in the ocean originating from a source typically thousands of kilometers away from the shoreline that is inundated. These waves are produced by the displacement of the entire water column of the ocean by either an underwater earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or extraterrestrial impact.
local tsunami
A series of gravity waves in the ocean originating from a source that is close to the shoreline that is inundated. These waves are produced by the displacement of the entire water column of the ocean by either an underwater earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or extraterrestrial impact.
mega-tsunami
A series of gravity waves that are about 100 times higher than the largest gravity waves produced by displacement of an entire column of ocean water from an undersea earthquake; produced by the impact of a large asteroid in the ocean.
runup
With respect to waves, the up-rush of the wave along the shore; also, the combined vertical and horizontal distance that a tsunami moves inland from the shoreline.
tsunami
A series of gravity waves caused by the large-scale displacement of the entire water column of the ocean or rarely a large lake. Most commonly the result of a large earthquake deforming the seafloor, although may also be caused by a large underwater or sea-cliff landslide, collapse of part of a volcano into the ocean, a submarine volcanic explosion, and the ocean impact of an asteroid. These waves are not tidal waves and, in a few cases, are not seismic sea waves.
tsunami ready
A certification issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or other governmental agency that a community has taken appropriate preparedness measures for future tsunamis.
tsunami runup map
A two-dimensional representation of the level to which a tsunami has inundated, or is projected to inundate, a coastal zone.
tsunami warning
An emergency notice from a governmental agency that a tsunami has been detected and is heading toward the area receiving the alert.
tsunami watch
An emergency notice from a governmental agency that an event has taken place - such as an earthquake, landslide, or volcanic eruption - which could cause a tsunami to strike the alerted area.
