Nationalism
Pride in one’s country or culture, often to the point where one is willing to fight for countries independence. Ex. Simon Bolivar helps liberate South American countries from Spanish control 1819-1825.
Imperialism:Colonialism
The complete control of a weaker nation’s social, economic, and political life by a stronger nation. For Gold, God & Glory. Ex. Great Britain takes control of India, European countries carve up Africa.
Westernization & Modernization
To adopt western ideas and culture. Sometimes also includes industrialization. Ex. Russia:Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Turkey:Kemal Ataturk, Japan:Empire Meiji (Meiji Restoration)
Cultural Diffusion
The spreading of ideas through contact such as trade or war.
Ex. Silk Road, Marco Polo's trip to China, Crusades.
Industrialization
Change from making products at home by hand to mass producing goods by manufacturing products in factories. Occurs in Great Britain 1750s. Shipping ports, colonies, coal & water, workers.
Interdependence
When countries rely on each other for raw materials, manufactured goods, military aid, etc.
Developing Countries (Third World Countries)
Nations that are economically and technologically less developed than industrialized nations. Ex. Somalia in Africa, Bangledesh in South Asia.
Apartheid
A political policy in South Africa where black South Africans could only live in certain areas, were required to use separate trains, beaches, restaurants, and schools, and could not enter into an interracial marriage.
Ex. Nelson Mandela helps blacks racial discrimination. He becomes 1st black president of S. Africa
