Sociology
the science that studies human society and social behaviour.
The goals of sociology are
Describe what happens;
Explain what happens;
Predict what happens; and,
Improve the quality of life.
How does the sociologist describe what happens?
The sociologist looks at the events of everyday living and sees, not just the event but also the hidden meaning behind the human action. He or she then uses different scientific methods to describe these events such as observations, historical methods, content and statistical analysis, case study and the survey method.
What is social interaction?
how people relate to one another and influence each other's behaviour.
How do sociologists explain what has happened?
They look for patterns in behaviour and the social factors that will explain why we do what we do.
Give an example of a sociologist making an inference or generalization about what is happening.
He shows that under certain circumstances, most individuals will act in a certain way based on social pressures and influences (e.g. bystander apathy).
What are predictions?
statements based on an understanding of the way events relate to one another
How can sociology improve one's life?
We may be able to recognize various possibilities and think and act in new and different ways.
Sociology is only one of the numerous disciplines that study human social behaviour. List three others.
anthropology,
psychology, and
economics
What is anthropology?
It is the study of the physical evolution of mankind.
Why is anthropology important?
By studying various aspects of past and present cultures, anthropologists have been able to provide us with a greater understanding of the influence of cultural practice on behavioural patterns.
What is psychology?
It is the science that studies the behaviour, thoughts, and human biology of individuals.
How can psychology be regarded as a BIOLOGICAL science? (2 things)
It studies biological growth and development and uses experimental studies to examine the effects of drugs on behaviours, plus it also examines the psychological factors that influence behaviour.
How does psychology differ from sociology?
Psychology study is focused on the individual while sociological study is usually the group.
What is social psychology?
It is the study of how an individual's behaviour and personality are affected by the social environment, combining aspects of psychology and sociology.
