Afferent division
the portion of the PNS that transmits sensory information from the sensory receptors to the CNS
Autonomic nerves
nerves innervating smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, glands, or the gastrointestinal system
Autonomic nervous system
the portion of the efferent division that regulates the activities of smooth muscles, cardica muscles, glands, or the gastrointestinal system
Autonomic tone
the low level of release of neurotransmitter by the different divisions of the autonomic nervous system resulting in a low leverl of regulation of innervated glands or organs
Dual innervation
the condition where a given organ or gland is innervated by both divisions of the autonomic nervous system
Muscarinic receptor
a subtype of cholinergic receptor that has a ery high affinity for muscarine
Nicotinic receptor
a subtype of cholinergic receptor that has a very high affinity for nicotine
Parasympathetic nervous system
PNS--> the portion of the autonomic nervous system arising from the brain and sacral regions of the spinal cord that mediated the bodies vegetative functions
Preganglionic
referring to a portion of a nerve cell or nerve located prior to the synapse between the preganglionic and postganglionic cell or ganglion
Postganglionic
referring to a portion of a nerve cell or nerve located after the synapse between the preganglionic and postganglionic cell or ganglion
Somatic nervous system
the portion of the efferent division that regulates contraction of skeletal muscles
