According to legend, what was the first colony in the New World to grow coffee?
In 1723, the French Captain Gabriel Mathieu de Clieu sailed from Nantes to the French colony of Martinique in the Caribbean Sea. Among his most prized onboard possessions was a single coffee tree, the progeny of an Yemeni arabica tree growing in a greenhouse in Paris. The subtropical tree found a hospitable climate in the West Indies, and coffee became a jealously guarded treasure on Martinique, but through espionage, trickery and theft specimens were smuggled to neighboring colonies. Legend suggests that the entire coffee industry of the New World was spawned from this single tree. Of course, the legends are not always right--the Dutch actually cultivated coffee in Guyana in 1718, and the French themselves had already introduced coffee to Hispaniola as early as 1715.
