Nitrous oxide

Class: Inhaled anesthetic gas


Use: analgesic


Adverse effect: megaloblastic anemia and peripheral neuropathy, hypotension, nausea/vomiting, apnea, expansion in body cavities

Halothane

Class: inhaled anesthetic volatile liquid


Use: slow induction/high potency - maintenance of anesthesia


Adverse effects: hypotension and bradycardia, arrhythmia, hepatitis

Isoflurane

Class: inhaled anesthetic volatile liquid


Use: potent anesthetic, useful in asthma due to bronchodilation


Adverse effects: arrhythmia, cardiac insufficiency, hypotension/tachycardia, intestinal obstruction

Sevoflurane

Class: inhaled anesthetic volatile liquid


Use: induce and maintain general anesthesia. Useful in asthma due to bronchodilation


Adverse effect: hypotension, cough, nausea/vomiting

Midazolam

Class: IV anesthetic

Thiopental

Class: IV anesthetic

Etomidate

Class: IV anesthetic


Use: rapid onset anesthesia. Less cardiovascular effect


Adverse effects: adrenal insufficiency, myoclonus, nausea/vomiting

Ketamine

Class: IV anesthetic


Use: rapid induction of anesthesia. Patients with asthma or in shock. Analgesia


Adverse effect: delirium, increased HR and BP, increased ICP

Propofol

Class: IV anesthetic


MoA: potentiates GABA and inhibits NMDA


Use: short acting anesthetic. Sedation of mechanically ventilated patients, antiemetic


Adverse effects: hypotension, apnea, infection, propofol infusion syndrome

Morphine

Class: adjuncts


Use: anelgesia


Adverse effect: respiratory depression, muscle rigidity

Fentanyl
