Name a birth control programme for managing population growth and why this policy was introduced.

China's one child policy reason for this was because 1- massive population of 1 billion


2- resources such as food,homes,schools were filling up too fast.

1. China has the largest population of any country 1 billion in 1979- estimated to be 1.8 by 2025. so government introduced one child policy. hoped to get it to 1.2 by 2025.

Explain the one-child policy

1. Couples with one child get benefits like longer maternity leave, better housing and free education.


2. Couples with more than one child lose these benefits and get fined part of their income 15%. 3.many had boys so they can carry the family name. aborted females this called "female infanticide"

What changes have been made to the policy?

1. Couples can have a second child in some rural areas if the first is a girl.


2. Couples can also have a second child if they are both single children themselves to care for the parents.

How effective has the policy been?

1. Prevented ~400 million births


2. Fertility rate from 5.7 to 1.8.


3. Speculation that it wasn't the one child policy but older policies that left longer gaps between children or less children wanted as people get wealthier.
