What creates sulphur dioxide |
Found in impurities in fuels so when the fuel burns, the sulphur does too. When sulphur reacts with oxygen in the air, sulphur dioxide is produced. |
What chemical can harm humans directly? |
Carbon monoxide because it's poisonous and can be found in home boilers |
How is carbon dioxide removed? |
Photosynthesis Dissolves in water |
What are hydrocarbon? |
Compounds made from hydrogen and carbon |
What is particulate carbon? |
Tiny carbon particles left from incomplete combustion. |
What chemical harms humans indirectly? |
Sulphur dioxide because it forms acid rain which gets into rivers and lakes and kills the fish. |
How is nitrogen pollution formed? |
Formed when nitrogen in the air react with each other because the air is so hot when fuels are burnt. |
When is nitrogen monoxide formed? |
When nitrogen and oxygen in the air are exposed to high temperatures, Eg. Car engines. |
How is nitrogen dioxide produced? |
When nitrogen monoxide reacts with more oxygen |
What's the simplest way to reduce pollution? |
Use less electricity and burn less fossil fuels |
How can we reduce pollution? |
. Remove S from natural gas before burning so SO2 isn't produced . Remove SO2 from flue gases |
What is wet scrubbing? |
When sulphur dioxide reacts with alkali to remove it from flue gases |
Which two alkalis can be used in wet scrubbing? |
1) sea water- sulphur dioxide is dissolved in sea water producing CO2, water and dissolved sulfate 2) alkaline slurry- slurry is sprayed onto gases and SO2 reacts with calcium oxide to produce calcium sulfite |
What does a catalytic converter do? |
Coverts nitrogen monoxide into nitrogron and oxygen (reduction reaction) and coverts carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide (oxidation) |
What's the problem with biofuels? |
Land is cleared to make room for the plants to be grown so animals lose habitats |
What's the problem with electric car batteries? |
Rely on burning fossil fuels to recharge them |
Name two chemicals which produce acid rain |
Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides |
Name three natural materials we get from plants |
Wood Paper Cotton |
Name three materials we get from animals |
Wool Silk Leather |
Name three synthetic materials |
Rubber Paint Polyester Nylon |
Melting point |
The temperature a solid turns to liquid |
Hardness |
How difficult it is to cut into a material |
Stifness |
How good a material is at not bending |
Compressive strength |
How good a material is at resisting a pushing force |
Tension strength |
How good a material is at resisting a pulling force |
Density |
Mass per unit volume |
