Non-pharmaceutical treatment for GERD |
Remain upright after meals Consume small amounts of food at a time and eat slowly
refrain from spicy or irritating foods.

Pharmacologic treatments for GERD |
Eliminate drugs that impair esophageal motility and lower esophageal sphincter tone
1. OTC antacid aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide combinations 30 milliliters regular strength 1 hour PC and qhs
2. OTC alginate alginic acid magnesium carbonate two to four tablets chewed PC and qhs followed by glass of water
3. OTC H2 receptor antagonists: ranitidine 75 milligrams bID or 150 milligrams bid 4. Proton pump inhibitor PPI Omeprazole 20 milligrams once a day half hour before food may require two times a day. |

Possible interactions of the proton pump inhibitor |
PPI's may reduce the efficacy of Clopidogrel. Monitor for the decreased efficacy and adjust appropriately. May interfere with cytochrome p450 metabolized agents such as diazepam, Warfarin, phenytoin. When Omeprazole is added or removed these drugs may require dosage adjustment. |
