VacA behaves as a passive urea transporter that is potentially capable of increasing the permeability of the gastric epithelium to urea, thereby creating a favorable environment for H. pylori infectivity.
All H. pylori bacteria contain the gene coding for VacA, but the gene is only expressed in those strains that encode another gene, CagA (cytotoxin associated gene). Strains producing VacA and CagA cause more intense tissue inflammation and induce cytokine production. |
