Five Themes of Geography

  1. The World in Spatial Terms
  2. Places and Regions
  3. Physical Systems
  4. Human Systems
  5. Environment and Society
  6. The Uses of Geography

Six Essential Elements of Geography

places that are united by one or more common characteristics.

regions

items such as hurricanes, volcanoes, and glaciers that shape the earth's surface

physical systems

ways that people shape our world-such as, creation of boundary lines or people settlement in an area

human systems

the natural world, as a whole or in a particular geographical area, especially as affected by human activity.

environment

0 degrees latitude-divides the earth into North and South Hemispheres

Equator

0 degrees longitude-divides the earth into East and West Hemispheres

Prime Meridian

one of many lines on the global grid running from the North Pole to the South Pole; used to measure degrees of longitude

meridian

one of many lines on the global grid that circle the earth north or south of the Equator; used to measure degrees of latitude

parallel

distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, measured in degrees

longitude

distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees

latitude

where one line of latitude crosses one lone of longitude

absolute location

symbol on a map that orients the information on the map to the directions (north, south, east, and west)

compass rose

north, south, east, and west

cardinal directions

northeast, northwest,southeast, and southwest

intermediate directions

A map element used to graphically represent the scale of a map. Typically a line marked like a ruler in units proportional to the map's scale.

scale bar

A map element used to explain the lines, symbols, and colors used on a map.

map key

a general purpose map that shows landforms and water features.

physical map

a general purpose map that shows the boundaries of countries, the location of cities and other human-made features. Also identifies major physical features

political map

type of political map: shows elevation

contour map

tool used for showing changes over a period of time. Titles of data are placed on the vertical and horizontal axes.

Line graph

tool used to compare data visually. Titles of data are placed on the vertical and horizontal axes.

bar graph

tool used to visual display how the WHOLE of something is divided into its PARTS

circle graph

tool used to present facts and numbers in an organized way, using rows and columns.

chart

tool used to make comparisons of data using rows of small pictures or symbols, with each picture or symbol representing an amount.

pictograph

a tool used to display weather patterns in a specific place. It combines a line graph and a bar graph.

climograph

a tool that uses drawings that show steps in a process, point out the parts of an object, or explain how something works

diagram

An imaginary line that is 180 degrees longitude, the regions to the east are counted as one day earlier on their calendar dates than the regions to the west.

International Date Line

mapmaker that use mathematical formulas to change information from round globes to flat maps

cartographer

an imaginary line that follows the curve of the earth; used by planes to represent the shortest distance between two cities.

great circle
