Characteristics of all fungi

Have a cell wall. Have spores to reproduce. Grow in hot, moist areas. Do not have chlorophyll. Use hyphae to obtain food.

Hyphae (HI fee)

Fungi that is a mass of many celled, threadlike tubes. Break down food outside of the fungus. Fungal cells absorb digested food.

Saprophytes

Organisms that obtain food by absorbing dead or decaying tissues of other organisms

Spores

A waterproof reproductive cell that can grow into a new organism. forms asexually and new fungus is genetically identical to the original. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION:

SEXUAL REPRODUCTION:

Fungus are not male or female. If two fungi are close together and join, a reproductive structure will form and meiosis will begin. The new fungi will genetically different from either parent.

Basidium

Club fungi: Mushroom. Spores are produced in a club shaped structure. The mushroom is the actual spore and the fungus is below the soil

Gills

Found under the mushroom's cap. Where spores are produced. Holds up the cap of the mushroom

Ascus (AS kus)

Sac fungi: molds and yeast. Spores are produced in little sac-like structure

Budding

Asexual reproduction of a single celled organism. Yeast: a new organism forms on the side of a parent and breaks off when develops. Genetically identical to parent

sporangium

Type of zygospore: fuzzy black mold (on bread and fruit) produce in a round spore case on the tips of upright hyphae. When the sporangium splits or breaks, the spores go into the air: If lands on warm, moist area they will grow

imperfect fungi

never reproduce sexually. Hard for scientists to classify. no evidence for life cycle. reproduce asexually by producing spores. (penicillium)

penecillium

Difficult to classify. imperfect fungi. used to make penicillin

Lichen

made from fungus and either green alga or cyanobacterium; very colorful. The two organisms have a relationship where they both benefit (mutualism). * Are a food source for many animals. * helps weather rocks. * sensitive to pollution so scientists know if pollutants are high in an area

Mycorrhizae (mi kuh RI zee)

Fungi that interact with plant roots. Mixture of hyphae and roots. fungus helps roots absorb nutrients from the soil better. Plant supplies the fungus with nutrients needed to grow
