Middle Proterozoic Era

When fungi first diverged from Animalia more than a billion years ago

Think "protists"

Zygomycetes

Black bread molds, named for large zygotes called zygospores

Mycetes means fungus in Greek

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM)

Lives in close association with plant roots

Symbiotic relationship

Ascomycetes

Unique reproductive structures called asci (ascus), produce truffles or morels

Asco means bag or sac in Greek

Basidiomycetes

Derived from basidia (club shaped reproductive cells). Reproductive structures occur as mushrooms, puffballs, stinkhorns, shelf fungi.

Ascomycetes and basidiomyces are most recent lineages

Cryptomycota

Earliest diverging fungi, lack a cell wall and can produce flagella

Can live in soil or water

Chytrids

Aquatic, cell wall made of chitin (present in all fungi except cryptomycota), only other fungi that produce flagella

Microsporidia

Named for small size and single-celled spores with chitin cell wall

Only reproduce inside animal host

Mycelium

Body type of fungi composed of branched filaments called hyphae

May be composed of smaller cross walls called septa

Conidia

Asexual spores produced at tips of hyphae

From Greek word konis meaning dust

Mycorrhizae

Mutualisms between hyphae of fungi and the roots of seed plants

Means fungus roots in Greek

Endomycorrhizae

Common type of mycorrhizae, occur within root tissue, grows along outer surface of plasma membrane. Highly branched arbuscules

Endo means inside in greek

Ectomycorrhizae

Type of mycorrhizae that coats plant roots, typical of trees

Ecto means outside in Greek

Lichens

Partnerships formed between fungi and photosynthetic green algae or bacteria, may be crustose, foliose (leaflike), or fruticose (upright or hang from trees)

Can grow on rocks, buildings, tree bark, and soil
