What are the four steps of the teaching process?
Preparation
Presentation
Application
Review and evaluation
Performance based objectives consist of the following three parts:
1. Description of Skill or Behavior
2. Conditions
3. Criteria

explain the meaning of each and how it applies to teaching
Description of skill: an accomplishment that can be measured. This usually includes verbiage such as "able to repeat the steps of.."

Conditions: rules under the task. equipment, tools, ref material and limitations should be included

Criteria: list of standard, PTS is an example of a list of criteria
What are the things on the instructor's "code of conduct"?
Make safety the number one priority,

Develop and exercise good judgment in making decisions,
Recognize and manage risk effectively,
Be accountable for his or her actions
Act with responsibility and courtesy
Adhere to prudent operating practices
Adhere to applicable laws and regulations.
What is a course of training?
a series of studies leading to a specific goal
A curriculum?
is a set of courses in an area of specialization
A syllabus is ?
a summary or outline of
a course of study that generally contains a description of
each lesson, including objectives and completion standards.
what are the two types of objectives?
performance-based and decision based. start with performance, end with scenario based decision training.
Logical organization of material is important. name some ways you can organize material and explain what they mean.
1. past to present
2. simple to complex (don't be afraid to omit some things in order to simplify it - tell student)
3. known to unknown
4. most frequently used to least used (ex. navigation methods)
Training delivery methods
name the 3
Lecture
Discussion
Guided Discussion
What is the best way to teach with the lecture method?
extemporaneous talking : talking from an outline
What differentiates discussion and guided discussion teaching methods?
Discussion methods don't require the student to have prior knowledge of the material. Guided discussions work well when the student has read over material and the instructor is going over it all and smoothing out any rough edges.
What types of questions can you use in guided discussions?
lead-off, overhead, rhetorical, direct, reverse, and relay.
what is a reverse question?
a question that has been reversed to the student that helps him answer his own question.
what is a relay question?
a question that is asked by a student but you open the question up to be answered by other students
What is problem based learning? simple definition
PBL is scenario-based in which the question evokes thought about real life problems that have real life answers
Teaching cognotive thinking is difficult. How can High Order of Thinking Skills instruction help the student? HOTS
RMIN, ADM, situational awareness, CFIT.

Basic approach to teaching HOTS:
1. Set up the problem.
2. Determine learning outcomes for the problem.
3. Solve the problem or task.
4. Reflect on problem-solving process.
5. Consider additional solutions through guided
discovery.
6. Reevaluate solution with additional options.
7. Reflect on this solution and why it is the best
solution.
8. Consider what “best” means (is it situational).
What types of HOTS instruction is there?
Scenario based training
Collaborative solution method (allowing more than one person to walk themselves through the problem)
Case study method
Student learn more efficiently in groups. What should a CFI know about group collaboration?
small, compatible groups that have a clear set of instructions and concrete goals from the beginning. opportunity for success and individual accountability is necessary as well
What is the demonstration-performance method?
hands on teaching in which you demonstrate and the student repeats.
order as follows:
explanation
demonstration
student performance
instructor supervision
evaluation
What is the drill and practice method?
something can't be learned in one session. multiple times to practice and sufficient time is necessary.
