cerebrum

-largest part of the brain

-outer layer of grey matter (cerebral cortex) and inner core of white matter

-surface is highly convoluted (raised regions=gyri; groves= sulci)

-conscious thoughts and intellectual functions

-process somatic sensory info (GSA)

-complex motor behaviors (GSE)

what does the right part of the cerebrum control?

left side of the body and is more artistic and has better spatial skills and understanding emotion

what does the left part of the cerebrum control?

right side of the body and is more analytical with math, logic, and languages

corpus callosum

connects right and left cerebrum hemispheres together; composed of over 200 million axons and organized into neural tracts

-white matter structure allows communication between hemispheres

diencephalon

-located in the central core of the brain

-connects the cerebrum to the brainstem

-contains thalamus and hypothalamus

Thalamus

sensory relay and processing center; R&L cerebellar lobes separated by 3rd ventricle

hypothalamus

-located inferior to thalamus

-primary link between nervous system and endocrine system (connected to pituitary gland)

-regulates the 4 Fs (food, sex, sleeping, temp)

-control of ANS

cerebellum

-"little brain"

-has 2 lobes connected by vermis; also has cerebellar cortex

-located posteriorly, inferior to occipital lobe and posterior to the pons and medulla oblongata dn 4th ventricle

-coordination of skeletal muscle and equilibrium in inner ear

-damage or disease here: ataxia (no motor control)

brainstem

midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata

midbrain

-mesencephalon

-connects cerebrum to the rest of the brainstem

-commnicates with cerebellum

-reflex center: visual and auditory

-CN 3 and 4 originate here

pons

-transmits/relays impulses between cerebrum and cerebellum and brainstem

-controls breathing

-houses 4th ventricle

-CN 5-8 originate here

medulla oblongata

-continuous with spinal courd, stops at foramen magnum

-controls vital automonic functions

-cardiac, vasomotor and respiratory centers (pons)

-CN 8-12 originate here

-gagging, coughing, sneezing, salivating, swallowing, vomiting
