How did Durkheim view education's major function?
The major transmission of society's norms and values from one generation to the next.
What is it necessary for?
To create social solidarity.
Why is school classed as a miniture society?
School teaches the children how to interact with each other and to follow a fixed set of rules. it prepares them for interacting with members of society as an adult and accepting laws and social rules.
Why does Durkheim believe that individuals must be taught specialist skills?
So they can take their place within a high compolex division of labour.

Marxists argue that education is there to serve the interests of the ruling class rather than society as a whole.
The transmission of the norms and values is not always successful and that some children openly reject the values.

They see it as a means of role allocation. the education system sitfs and sorts through people according to their abilities.
How will it lead to inequalities in society?
There is only a limited amount of talent and the talented few have to be persuaded to sacrifice a wage at a oung age and to stay on in education to claim bigger rewards in the future.
What is a critisism of Davis and Moore?
Intelligence and achievement have limited influence on educational achievement. Achievement is based on issues relating to social class, gender and ethnicity. eg: middle class children gain more qualifications than working class students.
