Functional Group Model is based on research areas
1. Grp. dynamics
2. Effectance 3. Needs Hierarchy 4. Purposeful activity 5. Adaptation |
NAP GE
Group Dynamics
concerns the interrelationships of persons in a small group
Effectance
refers to the belief that individuals are drawn toward an activity and that this behavior is self-motivated
Needs Hierarchy
The belief that humans have many needs, which are arranged in order of importance
Purposeful Activity
has meaning to the person completing the task
Adaptation
occurs through engaging in goal directed or personally meaning activity/occupations
Basic Principles of Groups Dynamics
1. Have a common goal & dynamic interaction between mbrs
2.Provide muliple types of feedback and support. 3. Promote independance from an externally designated leader in a developmental progression |
4. Support growth and change of mbrs.
5. Have a capacity for self-direction. 6. Can address individual needs on a task, emotional and social level. |
Basic Needs Hierarchy are organized as
-Physiological
-Safety -belonging and love -esteem -self-actualization |
Purposeful Activities can also be defined as?
Defined as those that encourage an adaptive response. Give direction to goal oriented behavior.
They must have intent and be practical in daily living
Assumptions
They are ideas we accept as vaild or true /s having scientific proof.
Assumptions that were made in the functional group model are in relation to?
-People i.e. people are bio-psycho-social systems.
-Health i.e. purposeful activity supports the health of mind and body in an individual and a collective being. Occupation-Based i.e. through active doing in a group experience, the individual gains a sense of self-worth and self-appraisal Action i.e. goal of funct. grp is not the product of the group, even though the group may have a meaningful product, but rather the learning process that occurs through active participation |
Social systems i.e. functional groups intrinsically provide theraputic benefit, because occupational behavior is learned and shared through a process of socialization.
Change i.e. funct. grps. attempt to move mbrs from D -> I or interdependance & from maladaptive functioning to adaptation Function i.e.funct. grps are concerned /c elements of performance as well as with types of performance areas such as work, play, social participation & self- care |
Basic concepts of the functional group model
adapation and occupation
adapation is brought about through occupation or action
Functional group model is
action-oriented
Action in a funct. grp model turns into 4 different forms
-purposeful action
-self initiated action -spontaneious action -group centered action |
-purposeful action means through which the individuals and the group preceive the action or activity in the group as being congruent /c their needs/goals.
-self-initiated action is the manner in which the individuals seek to be part of the grp & at some point in the process improve their skills or understanding of themselves on their own volition. Spontaneous action is essential to a funct. grp. mbrs can discover areas of behavior that interfere with or augment adaptation. group centered action allows maximal involvement through interaction of leaders & mbrs working toward a common task or goal. |
What is the ultimate goal of the functional grp?
To promote health or adaptation through purposeful, self-initated, spontaneous and grp centered action
A functional group can have?
multiple goals, specific goals for individual mbrs to general goals for the grp.
They can also be used as part of the evaluative process or to provide intervention. They're structured to motivate mbrs to action to facilitate adaptations, prevent deficits and promote healthy living
Assessment Instruments used in the functional grp include..
observation
needs assessment content and process analysis |
-observation guides provide a structured approach for initial evaluation and for ongoing assessment of grp. structure & function.
group mbrs are taught to be observers and evaluators of grp. process & progress towards goals |
What are Intervention Stratigies?
They are the media, modalities, methods, techniques & equipment used to bring change in the individual & achieve specific goals or objectives
These strategies include defining issues and expectations during the course of the group.
Intervention and goal formation is guided by an in depth group protocol format |
Mosaic Projects
-ways to grade and adapt activities |
-vary color, shape & size of pieces
-vary complexity of design to copy or produce -vary materials: ceramic tile, plastic tile, seeds, paper -glueing process (individual vs. line vs. section) -vary size and shape of surface -vary grout (premixed vs. dry, color) |
Theraputic applications of mosaics
-improve fine motor control/coordination
-improve pinch -strengthen cylindrical grasp -encourage self expression -improve attention span -improve concentration -increased use of planning & organizing skills -improve use of spatial relationship skills -restore sequencing |
