What is an indirect object pronoun?
An indirect object pronoun takes the place of an indirect object noun. You might say than an indirect object "receives" the direct object because it is usually a matter of something "going" to someone; for example, to me, to you, to him, to her, to it, to us, to them. Sometimes the to is not mentioned in English: I am giving him the book. Then, too, there are some verbs in French that take an indirect object pronoun because the verb takes the preposition à; for example, Je lui réponds.
Observations apropos of indirect object pronouns.
(1) An indirect object pronoun is ordinarily placed in front of the verb.
(2) To make the verb negative, put ne in front of the indirect object pronoun and pas after the verb.
Ex., Pierre ne me donne pas le gâteau.
(3) In the affirmative imperative, do the same as you did for the direct object pronouns. The indirect object pronoun is put right after the verb and joined with a hyphen.
Ex., Donnez-lui le gâteau.
(4) In the affirmative imperative, me changes to moi when it is tacked on to the verb and joined with a hyphen.
Ex., Donnez-moi le gâteau.
(5) In the negative imperative, do the same as you did for the direct object pronouns. Put the indirect object pronoun in front of the verb, where it ordinarily goes.
Ex., Ne me donnez pas le gâteau.
Ex., Ne lui donnex pas le gâteau.
(6) If the indirect object pronoun is the object of an infinitive, do the same as you did for the direct object pronouns. Put the indirect object pronoun in front of the infinitive.
Ex., Janine veut leur parler.
Explain the French pronoun Y.
