Past participle agreement: être
|
Past participle agreement is determined by the auxiliary verb. The past participle of a verb conjugated withe auxiliary être agrees in gender and number with the subject of that verb.

Past participle agreement: avoir
|
Past participle agrees with the preceding direct object. If the direct object follows the verb, the past participle remains invariable:
Mon père a quitté ma mère. |

Negation in passé composé
|
In a negative sentence, it is the auxiliary verb, not the past participle, that is negated:
Mon père est allé travailler en France, mais il n'est jamais revenu. |

When used in the past context venir + de is always in the imperfect: Elle venait de s'installer chez sa mère quand elle est tombée gravement malade=She had just moved in w/ her mother when she got very sick.

Pluperfect formation
|
the imperfect of the auxiliary verb (être or avoir) + the past partciple of the main verb:
Ma mère m'a dit un jour qu'elle avait reçu une lettre en français=My mother told me one day that she had received a letter in French. |

-same verbs use être
-Reflexive verbs use auxiliary être in the pluperfect -All other verbs use avoir as the auxiliary in pluperfect -In negative sentence, the auxiliary verb, not the past participle, is negated |

The pluperfect past participle
|
The past participle of a verb conjugated with the auxilary être agrees in gender and number with the subject of that verb.
The past participle of a verb conjugated with avoir agrees in gender and number with the preceding direct object, if there is one. |

Past infinitves
|
avant de + past infinitive=avant de partir.
Infinitives are used after prepositions, except en. |

Past Infinitives: après
|
Following après, a past infinitive must be used. In English this would make the -ing form of a verb (gerund):
Après être allés en France, ses parents ont ouvert un restaurant=After they went to France, her parents opened a restaurant. |

Manquer (à)
|
To miss; If you want to say you miss someone or something:
Les Herschel manquent à Saba=Saba misses the Herschels. Mes parents me manquent=I miss my parents. |

Rendre
|
To express the idea that something or someone makes you feel a certain way, the verb rendre is used (not faire):
Cette nouvelle me rend triste=This news makes me sad. Son retour a rendu ses parents heureux=His return made his parents happy. |

Sortir
|
To leave, to go out; Conjugated w/ être, when used with a location, the preposition de follows the verb:
Nous sommes sortis=We went out Elle sort de sa chambre=She leaves (goes out of) her room. |

Partir
|
To leave; Conjugated with être, when used w/ a location, the preposition de follows the verb:
Elle est partie=She left. Ils sont partis du Maroc=They left Morocco. |
|
Quitter
|
To leave; Conjugated w/avoir. The verb must always be followed by a direct object, what or whom is being left must be stated.
Elle a quitté sa famille=She left her family. Mes ancêtres ont quitté l'Angleterre il y a deux cents ans=My ancestors left England two hundred years ago. |
