Grocery stores don't sell over the counter drugs. In a pharmacies there are drugs, and the pharmacist can sometimes give you a prescription.

Most people have a carte bleue which is like a debt card. It has a memory chip with a PIN so you don't have to sign, you just have to type in your PIN
Drugstores vs. Pharmacies
pharmacies sell perscription medicines and drugstores sell beauty and hygene products. Usually Pharmacies are closed on Sundays so there is a pharmacie de garde, which is "on call" on the weekend.

French post offices often offer banking services. The financial division became the banque postale that had regular bank services, including loans.
