Direct Object Identification and Placement Rule

- D.O. receives the action of the verb directly

- when I.O. is animate or a person, the I.O.P. is lui, leur etc. (following rules of I.O.P. card)

- when I.O. is inanimate or a "thing", the I.O.P is always "y"


- regardless of number or gender

(For animate objects or people)

- animate I.O. preceded with "de", is replaced with "de + Emphatic Pronoun"


- "de + Emphatic Pronoun" placed behind verb




Ex: Je rêve de l'homme parfait.

(For inanimate objects of things)

- inanimate I.O. preceded with "de", is replaced by "en"


- regardless of number or gender, always "en"


- "en" placed before verb

Emphatic Pronouns Rule

- only used for people


- mostly used to represent the object of a preposition


- always placed after their preposition




Ex: Elle travaille pour Mr. et Mme Dupont.

- can be used to emphasise the subject




Ex: Moi, je pense que c'est très important!


I think it is very important!


Lui, il connaît tout le monde.
