General condition
After the Roman Empire fell apart the whole of western Europe shatters and there is very little unity- there is not empire and barbarians (uncivilized person) are wandering freely

He was a pagan but his wife(cludilda) was an christen. She bugged him to convert, so he made a deal with his wife that if her God would help him he would consider converting. When the country went to war with what today is Germany, Clouis army was being destroyed. So he raised his hands to the heavens and played and begged Jesus for help. If he would receive this help he would convert. He won the battle and then was baptized.
Mrs. Blunk feels he converted so that he could gain the support of the Roman Catholic Church.able
~With his victory he was to unitized the Gals’ and the Franks’
~He made a strong kingdom based off the support of the church and this leadership and strenghth
~When he died the kingdom was slit up between his children and the kingdom started to fall apart again
First Pepin
(aka. Mayor of the Palace- ran the household and kingdom; could be refered as a number one butler) 600ish -640. helped the king (don’t have the king’s name) rule the kingdom.
a. By the 600’s the only family left of Clouis was a woman, a child and a menally challenged person and they needed help running the kingdom. So they hired Pepin who helped the king who had mental challenges. Even though the King was kind, he was not equipped to rule the country.
b. After Pepin died his son took over and then his son took over
First Charles
732 aka Charles the hammer, or Charles Martel
a. By 711 Spain was established and was a muslin country- christens and muslin lived together with no battled here. They tried to expand into France.
b. The king of this time was too weak to fight, so Charles (the grandson of Pepin) put together an army
c. They went to Battle called the Battle of the tours 732. Charles’s army won.
d. The world might be different today due to this battle if the Spain muslin won because Europe would most likely be a muslin dominating continent. Which means we might be Muslins
second Pepin
aka Pepin the short (as in short tempered)
a. was Charles son.
b. Went to the Pope. And asked him who should wear the crown. He was really asking will you support me when I’m doing all the work. (do you mind if I took over). And the Pope responded that who’s doing the work should wear the crown. So Pepin went back home and put the King in a Monastery. Pepin then becomes King.
Pepins family is then known as the Carolingan Family 750. (Latin word for Charles is Carol)
Charles
- Charles the Great or Charlemagne (in old French called Charlemagne) 769-814
a. Charles the great was called the great for four reasons
1. he was a feared man in the sense was 6’5ish (very tall for this time). Hefty great warrior that conquers much territory (look at back map)
2. He was a very effective ruler. He knew he couldn’t watch all over his land, so he appointed representatives to look after his land. But he also sent two messengers(called messenger of the lords; not the gods but lords of the land; usually a knight and a bishop) to all over the lands to make sure the representatives where doing there job.
3. He reinforced education and Christianity. He would hire the most famous scholars to teach at the school that would be attached to the church. With there reinforced education, eventually this will make the government more effective. He really felt it was also his job to spread the world of Christianity.

Louis the Pious 814-843
a. when Louis died the land was split up between his three Children (check Map 2
Who were the 3 child of Louis the Pious and what land did they inherited
1. Charles the Bald- western land- later this became France
2. Lothair I-oldest son- middle land. Watched over his brothers on both sides of him. Later this broke up into many countries inherited
3. Louis the German- Eastern land- later this became Germany.
What happened in 900 A.C.E to the Franks Empire
a. The Franks in the 900’s was too weak to hold off invaders. Much of Europe was invaded from all sides (map 3)
i. From the south the Muslim invaded
ii. From the east Magyars (Hungarians) invaded
iii. From the north the Vikings invaded (they were the most feared)
b. In order to survive they made a new political system called feudalism
