Spiral fracture
is a bone fracture occurring when torque is applied along the axis of a bone
stress fracture
small crack in a bone. often develops from overuse
Stable fracture
The broken ends of the bone line up and are barely out of place.
Open, compound fracture
The skin may be pierced by the bone or by a blow that breaks the skin at the time of the fracture. The bone may or may not be visible in the wound.
Transverse fracture
his type of fracture has a horizontal fracture line.
Oblique fracture
This type of fracture has an angled pattern.
Comminuted fracture
This type of fracture, the bone shatters into three or more pieces.
Salter-Harris
Type I
These fractures break through the bone at the growth plate, separating the bone end from the bone shaft and completely disrupting the growth plate.
Salter-Harris
Type II
These fractures break through part of the bone at the growth plate and crack through the bone shaft as well.
Salter-Harris
Type III
These fractures cross through a portion of the growth plate and break off a piece of the bone end.
Salter-Harris
Type IV
These fractures break through the bone shaft, the growth plate, and the end of the bone.
Salter-Harris
Type V
These fractures occur due to a crushing injury to the growth plate from a compression force. They are rare fractures.
Greenstick Fracture
an incomplete fracture in which the bone is bent. This type occurs most often in children.
Impacted fracture
Is one whose ends are driven into each other.
Compression Fracture
The bone is crushed, causing the broken bone to be wider or flatter in appearance.
articular fracture
nvolves a joint surface.
Articular is cartilage at the end of the long bones where bones articulate, or meet.
avulsion fracture
A separation of a small bone fragment from the bone where a tendon or ligament is attached.
Avulsion is skin that is pulled or torn away.
Colles' fracture
The lower end of the radius (wrist) with displacement of the fragment.
displaced fracture
Fragments are out of position.
extracapsular fracture
Outside the joint capsule.
femoral neck fracture
Located on the femur (the neck of the femur).
incomplete fracture
Bone is fractured but not in two.
intertochanteric fracture
In the trochanter of the femur.
intracapsular fracture
Inside the joint capsule.
longitudinal fracture
Runs the length of the bone.
nondisplaced fracture
Fragments are still in correct position.
(not out of place or position)
pathologic fracture
Caused by weakness from a disease.
Pott's fracture
Lower part of the fibula and tibia(foot), with outward displacement of the foot.
stellate fracture
Forms a star-like pattern.
subcapital fracture
Below (sub) the head (caput) of the femur.
