What is a fraction?
A fraction in latin means "broken". In math it means a part of a whole number or proportion of a whole.
Ex. If you have a pie cut into 4 equal pieces and you eat one piece that leaves 3 pieces out of the four. You would now call this 3/4 or three-fouths.
What is a numerator?
The numerator is the top number of a fraction. This number represents the portion of the whole number left.
Ex. 3/4 or 3 over 4, would be have a numerator of 3. There are 3 pieces of a pie that was cut into 4 equal pieces left.
What is a denominator?
The denominator is the number on the bottom of a fraction.
Ex. 25/100 or 25 over 100, would have a denominator of 100. There are 25 cookies out of the 100 you started with left to eat.
How to use conversion with turning a fraction to a decimal.
converting a fraction to a decimal means you divide the denominator into the numerator
Ex. take the fraction 1/2
divide the 2 into the 1. The answer is 0.5 in decimal form. |
How to use conversion for decimals to fractions.
place the decimal over 100 and divide.
Ex. take the decimal or percentage of 75% or .75 and place it over 100. Divide 75 by 100 to get the fraction of 3/4.
equivalent fractions
Equivalent fractions are the same amounts even if the fractions have different numbers in the numerator and denominator spaces.
Ex. A whole number is the # you start with for a particular object. You can use the same pie to show the same fraction or portion used in differents ways. For example, 1/2 can also mean 3/6. That is because the whole pie was divided into half (1/2) meaning two large pieces. It can also be cut into those two large pieces and cut again to represent the same amount of pie, but smaller servings.
lowest terms of a fraction
The lowest term of a fraction is when the fractions numerator and denominator have no common factor greater than 1.
Ex. 25/100 can be reduced to 5/20 and than into its lowest term of 1/4. There are no more options.
