Fraction
The symbol represents a fraction where n and d are whole numbers and d is not 0.
Mixed number
A mixed number is made up of a whole number and a fraction. For example, 1 ½.
Least Common Denominator (LCD)
The least common denominator (LCD) is the least common multiple of the denominators.
Improper fraction
An improper fraction is a fraction that is greater than one (numerator is greater than the denominator).
Reciprocals
Two numbers are reciprocals if their product is 1. A reciprocal is the inverse of the fraction (numerator becomes denominator and denominator becomes numerator.) For example 4/5 and 5/4 are reciprocals.
Add or subtract fractions
To add or subtract fractions, the denominators must be the same.
To add or subtract fractions
1) If the denominators are different, rewrite both fractions using the LCD. 2) Add or subtract the numerators. 3) Write the sum or difference over the denominator. 4) Rewrite in lowest terms.
To rewrite a mixed number as an improper fraction
multiply the denominator by the whole number, then add the numerator.
To rewrite an improper fraction as a mixed number
divide the denominator into the numerator and reduce to lowest terms.
Add or subtract mixed numbers
When adding or subtracting mixed numbers, you need to work with improper fractions. 1) Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions2) If the denominators are different, rewrite both fractions using the LCD.3) Add or subtract the numerators. 4) Write the sum or difference over the denominator. 5) Rewrite in lowest terms. Note: To add/subtract mixed numbers, you can add/subtract the whole parts, then add/subtract the fraction parts and reduce to lowest terms. Put wholes and fractions together.
