Ethics

Involves determining the best course of action and a certain situation. Ethical reasoning is the analysis of what is right and reasonable.

Bioethics

The application of ethics to healthcare.

Beneficence

One is required to do or promote good for others.

Nonmaleficence

One must avoid risking or causing harm to others.


Autonomy

People have the right to self-determination. This includes the right to respect, privacy, and the information necessary to make decisions.

Justice

All people should be treated equally and fairly regardless of disease or social or economical status. Rendering to others what is due them.

Elements of negligence <4>

Duty = the nurse must have a duty to act or give care to the patient. It must be part of the nurses responsibility.


Breach of Duty = a violation of that Duty must occur. The nurse fails to conform to establish standards for performing that Duty.


Damage = There must be injury or harm to the patient as a result of the nurses breach of Duty.


Proximate cause = the nurse's breach of Duty must be proved to be the cause of harm to the patient.

Requirements of informed consent (4)

1. Patients competence to consent.


2. Full disclosure of information.


3. Patients understanding of information.
