filter theory

blocks irrelevant information so that only relevant information comes through

early selection = the filter for attention occurs early in the stream of information processing

late selection = when the filter for attention occurs late in the stream of information processing (new theory - only the intensity is diminished, therefore it can still get detected if it is of high priority

load theory = the amount of processing an unattented stimuli will recieve depends upon how difficult it is to process the unattended target

Resource theory

attention is limited, like a spot light = resources of attention can be shone on specific visual locations of interest

covert shift of attention = movement of eyes

overt = dont move eyes

zoom lens model

dual task paradigm = when tasks are performed simultaneously resources are split between the tasks and the performance goes down due to decreased resources available for the individual task

normalization model of attention

can amplify information which is necesary and need to focus on while being able to decrease sensetivity towards distractors
