cast
type of fossil that forms when sand, minerals, or other matter fill a cavity-shapped mold overtime and then harden, forming a replica of the original organism.
mold
a fossil type that is an impression of a shell, bone, or other body parts left in the rock after the organism is covered by soft material.
fossil
the preserved remains or impression of the organisms of earths geological past.
weathering
the breaking down of earths features into smaller pieces.
erosion
the process of which materials are broken down and moved from place to place.
igneous
rock formed by the solidification of molten magma.
metamorphic
rock altered by pressure and heat.
sedimentary
rock formed from consolidated clay sediments.
strata
A layer or a series of layers of rock in the ground
name an example of each rock type.
igneous, sedimentary, and metamophic
what is a mineral- list and define
minerals have 5 properties, color-a mineral may be any color, or different color. hardness- a mineral may be very hard, or very soft,or in-between. Diamonds are the hardest mineral , and talc is the softest. Luster- is how a mineral's surface reflects light. A mineral can be shiny.
how do scientists identify minerals?
Color
Luster
Streak
Cleavage/Fracture
how do scientist know the age of fossils?
scientist date the rock;strata first, then date the fossil in its rock.
what is radiometric dating?
it uses the radiometric element to help determine the age by measuring the age of radioactive elements in the fossil.
how do scientists know when the dinosaurs became extinct?
the fossils were found below a layer with no other dino. fossils above.
(discussion ?-write a paragraph)...why is it important to study rocks and fossils?
to find evidence of plants and animals that lived long ago.
-to prepare for events so humans and animals can survive them
-to prevent catastrophic events from happening again
-NASA has established a reserch team to study rocks, astroids and commits
what impact would it have on earth if it was hit by a commit or astroid?
possibly there would be a major explosion and a shock wave that would cause earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, and massive destruction.
what is a "shooting star?"
A small, rapidly moving meteor burning up on entering the earth's atmosphere.
