What is Adaptive Radiation?
process which gives rise to multiple species that exploit different niches.
Primates ?
- Primates are an older order close to radiation from mammal groups.
-largest size range of any class.
Natural History of Primates?
1. Came from a line of small insect eating animals.
2. Moved into the trees – new niche produced when flowering plants evolved
Features of Primates?
- Frontated Eyes
- Post orbital bar
- Reduced muzzle
- Finger nails
- Larger brain
Frontated Eyes?
Binocular vision ->eyes moving to the front of the head...3d vision.
Post orbital bar?
enclosed eye sockets --> bone protection around the eye.
Protects the eye from popping out.
Tri-color vision ?
ability to see red, yellow, blue all the colors – important so you can see your food better
Reduced muzzle?
reduced sense of smell...not needed in trees. Primates have very poor sense of smell.
Grasping hands?
opposable thumb --> ability to take your hand and touch all your fingers. Ability to grasp important because its easier to get food.
Finger Nail?
Not claws. Not attached to bone.
Distributing pressure ....allows greater surface area to hold things.
Large Brains?
Much larger than most mammals. It is important because helps them building tools without brain we are weak.
